The papers had been owned by Stewart McLeod, a Clayton resident who used to live in St. Pauls. McLeod will continue to own the Clayton News-Star.
Heartland also owns The Robesonian, a daily paper in Robeson County.

"Customers should not expect any changes in service. We are committed to producing the best products possible for all of the communities we serve, and are proud to add these newspapers to the family."
Heartland currently owns 28 newspapers in North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, West Virginia and Oklahoma. The company is headquartered in Old Saybrook, Conn.
